I cannot believe it has been 5 years since we started our journey of homeschooling. And when I say journey, it has been one of the most pleasurable journeys of my life. And I understand this won’t be for everyone, but it has been one of my most rewarding experiences. So if you are seeking a different way of teaching your children, or if you want to have more control over your child’s education, this is for you…If not, share it with someone who may need the information.

Every year, I like to share an updated list of things that I am using and things that I have learned along the way. One thing I can be honest and say is that I had no idea what I was doing when I started. Thankfully, I used a curriculum that really balanced things out for me.  One thing about life is that you live and you learn.

There is so much information on the internet about homeschooling. Have you ever found so much information, but not the information you need? I’ve been there, and I would never want to do that to you. I hope that I am providing a real insight into what homeschool looks like for my family. And I also hope that I am providing you with some tools that you can use if you ever decide to homeschool.

Let’s get started!

My updated list of homeschool information.

  1. You don’t have to homeschool alone. There are so many co-ops and connections in every city. Whether you want to be in a part of a large group or a small group, there are so many to choose from. And if you can’t find one to fit your needs, in most states, you can always start your own.
  2. Every co-op isn’t the same. I honestly think that in the world of co-ops, you get what you give (or pay for).  There is typically a monthly fee attached to co-ops. Now here’s where you need to pay attention and ask questions: what does the co-op offer, who is involved, who’s leading it, and this is a great time to do a small background check ( especially if it’s a co-op that doesn’t have licensed teachers or even parents with college degrees).
  3. Shop and study all curriculum. Currently, in my son’s co-op, they are offering a Christian History book. Although I am a Christian, some of the things that are written in the book go against my morals. Now that he is there, the only thing I can do is offer him a supplemental education choice.  So make sure you lead with your heart when choosing the best curriculum, whether it is Christian or secular.
  4. ChatGPT is your best friend.  Especially if you are solo homeschooling. She( Chat) can make your lesson plans weekly.  She can also do your weekly schedule for you and give you book ideas for your scholars.
  5. Study.com is also a great resource for older children. There are accredited classes for students, and they supply a dashboard to track your child’s progress. They also provide a gradebook, and your tests are graded for you and recorded for your records. Classes can be done at your own speed, and at the end of the year, you are provided a transcript for your records.
  6. You don’t have to take a GED path to graduation while homeschooling. There are accredited programs that offer High School diplomas and graduation. ( Liberty University, Study.com/ Accellus, and more ).
  7. School still doesn’t take all day, but as your child ages, they need to practice a little more patience when working on schoolwork. Where we were doing class in 4/5 hours 3 days a week, we are currently doing 4/5 hours 5 days a week.
  8. Though there are several online programs, writing and reading physical books have been our lifeline. For me, it has been important to balance technology and tradition.
  9. You can do specials outside the home.  There are so many places offering music, physical fitness, cooking classes, and more. And a lot of these classes are provided during the day.
  10. Will we homeschool through high school…No. This has been a great option for us, but at the moment my children decide where they want to be …we will make that move. Kinda. BasicallyTesha
